Each app must have its own registration, and separate registration is required for debug and release builds. In order to load map tiles during testing, you must register the debug build of your app.
Registration for the release build is a separate process and occurs automatically when you submit your app if you have already created a debug registration.
Registration for apps that used Maps v1 will be migrated to v2.
Registration requires three steps:
- Retrieve the MD5 and SHA-256 debug fingerprint for your app.
- Register your app on the Amazon Mobile Apps & Games Developer portal.
- Submit a debug registration request for your app. Provide the debug fingerprint retrieved in step 1 in this submission.
Getting the MD5 and SHA-256 Debug Fingerprint
With your registration request, you must provide the MD5 and SHA-256 debug fingerprint that is applied by the tools that you use to build your app.
To obtain the fingerprint, you can run a keytool
command from the JDK bin directory. Before running the keytool command, you need to know the path to the debug keystore.
To show the path to the debug keystore in Eclipse:
- On the Windows menu, click Preferences.
- Expand Android, and then click Build.
- In the Default debug keystore box, view or copy the path.
The following table shows the default locations for the debug keystore.

If you see only the SHA1 fingerprint under Certificate fingerprints, be sure to use the -v

You can submit registration requests for your apps on the Amazon Mobile Apps & Games Developer Portal.
To register your app:
- Sign in, and then open the list of your apps.
- If the app that you want to register for the Amazon Maps API is not already listed, click Add a New App.
- Fill out the form, and then click Save.
Submitting Your Debug Registration Request
To submit a debug registration request for your app that uses the Amazon Maps API:
- On the Amazon Apps & Games Developer Portal, open the list of your apps.
- Click the app that you want to register. If your app is not listed, first add the app to the portal.
- Click Maps.
- Click Add a Debug Registration.
- In the Package name box, enter the package name for your app.
- In the Developer signature box, enter the MD5 and SHA-256 fingerprint of the debug certificate that you obtained by running the keytool command.
- Click Submit.
It takes time to propagate the registration to your device. After clicking Submit, allow one hour before testing the app that you registered. If a recently registered app does not show map tiles, you may need to allow more time for registration to take effect.

Once you have registered your app, you can use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to connect your device to a development computer for testing and debugging.

Make sure that you include the following in your test plans:
- Test whether map tiles appear when you run your app.
- Test all of your mapping-related functionality.
- Where Google Maps and Amazon Maps API functionality differs, verify that your app works as you intended, particularly if you migrated the application from Google Maps. For information about the differences, see Differences between the Amazon Maps API and Google Maps API.
Verify that your application adjusts on devices that do not support the Amazon Maps API v2.
The Amazon Maps v2 API is supported on 3rd generation or later Fire tablets with FireOS 4.5 and later. Earlier devices (Kindle Fire tablets 2nd generation and earlier) do not support the Maps API.
Test your app on earlier devices to ensure that it runs successfully with mapping functionality hidden.

Speedster is a native Mac app for testing your internet speed. Sure, there are quite a few popular websites out there for speed tests, but they’re all cluttered with ads and the experience offered by them is less than stellar. A majority of those sites also rely on Flash for their speed tests, so you either need to use Google Chrome or have Flash installed on your system.
Speedster prides itself on being a native utility built for OS X. It has been developed by developer Reda Lemeden, who’s previously brought us another network utility for Mac — IPinator. Speedster uses a 100% native UI and a beautiful one at that. There are no ads built into the app, so your experience is just as it should be. It runs in a tiny window on your desktop and is able to run the test on its own. You can test the speed of your network with a single click and the results can be shared using OS X’s native share menu.
Speedster is available Free on the Mac App Store but you only get 3 tests per day. There’s a $3.99 IAP to remove this daily limit. Features like a Light theme, test logs with graphs, data export and test accuracy settings are on the roadmap according to the developer.
Update — May 17th, 2016: Speedster today has been updated to Version 2.0, and with it, the app as we have known it is dead. With today’s release, Speedster no longer offers any FREE tests. It is now merely a client app for the SpeedOf.Me speed testing service, and requires you to use your own API keys for it to work. That is, you have to sign up for a paid API plan starting at $4.99 a month to run any speed tests.
Users who have previously purchased any consumable tests through IAPs in the app will be able to continue till they expire. Similarly, users who have purchased unlimited tests in the app will be able to run the app as usual. Today’s change only affects those who have been using the Free Tests in the app.

The free version of Speedster had a good run, but I can no longer support it due to high API costs and a stream of support tickets about things I do not control such as test accuracy etc.
Speedster 2.0 is a transparent client for the SpeedOfMe API. You can subscribe to one of their monthly plans and use your API key on the app. Consumable test packs will remain as a secondary option until further notice.
Existing Hero (unlimited tests) customers are still able to use and restore their in-app purchase.

It’s sad to see Speedster turn into this, but it also speaks a lot about the disadvantages of relying upon 3rd party APIs and also what indie developers have to deal with today.
